PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR POSITIONAL PLAGIOCEPHALY OR TORTICOLLIS

WHAT IS POSITIONAL PLAGIOCEPHALY?

A persistent flattening on one side or the back of your baby’s head.
Results from muscular torticollis, prematurity or back sleeping.
May be common with multiple births.
Increasing numbers of babies noted over the past couple of years.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

Flattening on one part of the head.
Ear on the flattened side pushed forward and/or one ear higher than the other.
Asymmetrical forehead, neck or jaw.
Asymmetrical eye size.
Tight neck muscles due to positioning of head to a preferred side.
With torticollis (shortening of neck muscle), see head turned/tilted to one side.
Babies may present with developmental delay due to weakness- can be subtle.
